March 3, 2017
Dear de Toledo Family,
It is my honor to announce that the de Toledo High School Board of Directors has unanimously selected Mark Shpall to become our Head of School, effective July 1, 2018.
Mr. Shpall’s history within our community and his background make him uniquely qualified to lead dTHS and to expand upon the foundation built by our founding Head of School, Dr. Bruce Powell. Mr. Shpall’s background is deep and diverse. He earned his B.A. from UCSB, a J.D. from USC and an M.A. in Education from Pepperdine. His formal education only tells a small part of the picture. He has held many positions at the school: Dean of Students (4 years), Director of Community Programming (5 years), Coordinator of CAIS/WASC Accreditation (6 years), 11/12 Grade Dean (8 years), AP Government Teacher (10 years), and much, much more. He brings many important attributes to the position including an unwavering commitment to the values and mission of de Toledo High School. As a founding faculty member, he has lived the school’s culture, and has been an integral part of the dTHS story.
During the 2017-18 school year, Mr. Shpall will serve as Head of School Designate, working closely with Dr. Powell to develop a smooth transition of leadership for dTHS. Mr. Shpall was chosen from a national pool of impressive candidates after a very thorough search process. His appointment was the result of united and enthusiastic support from the Head of School Search committee and the dTHS Board of Directors. In Mr. Shpall, we have found a passionate and dynamic leader.
At the appropriate time, we will celebrate the many vital contributions that Dr. Powell has made to our school. Indeed, Dr. Powell and our Founding Board have created a model for Jewish education in North America. Dr. Powell’s list of accomplishments is long; however, his true and lasting legacy is the over 1,000 dTHS Alumni who live with integrity, purpose, and Jewish values.
I want to sincerely thank all the members of our community for your commitment to this search process and your invaluable and thoughtful feedback.
Please join me in congratulating Mr. Shpall on his upcoming position as Head of School. We are more than confident that under Mr. Shpall’s leadership de Toledo High School will continue to set the standard for an education where outstanding academic programs coupled with Jewish values and wisdom help form women and men of character, and who make important contributions to our nation, to Israel, and to our world.
President, Board of Directors
